Team Dayton U19 Wins Third State Cup Beavercreek, Ohio The Team Dayton U19 Mens soccer team captured their third consecutive Ohio South Youth Soccer Association State Cup championship on Sunday June 8th at the John Ankeney Soccer Complex in Beavercreek. Team Dayton defeated Cincinnati United Premier by a final score of 2-1 in a tense and exciting overtime match. After a scoreless first half, Cincinnati United took a 1-0 lead on a great goal out of the midfield in the 55th minute. After gaining the advantage, Cincinnati United shifted tactics and turned away several Team Dayton attacks with tenacious defense. In the 80th minute, Wright State Universitys Jon McClain headed home a long throw-in from the University of Marylands Kenny Bertz to equalize the score. The teams battled to full time without another score and went to overtime. Playing in the 104th minute, Team Dayton was awarded a direct kick from 25 yards out on the right side. Evansville Universitys Chris Binder sliced a right footed smash around Cincinnatis wall and into the upper left corner and Team Daytons players celebrated the exciting golden goal victory. Team Dayton reached the championship match with a convincing 5-1 victory over Columbus East Soccer Association on June 7th. Ohio States Kevin Nugent lead the charge with 2 goals and 1 assist while McClain added one goal and one assist and Bertz and Binder contributed one goal each. Team Dayton now advances to the Region II Championships at Des Moines, Iowa from June 20-25. In 2001, Team Dayton captured the Region II championship and went on to win the USYSA national championship. At the 2002 regionals, Team Dayton advanced to the championship match but lost to Nebraskas NFC Vincere. Circled in red letters on the Team Dayton calendar is a June 22, 7 PM rematch with the Nebraska champions at the James Cownie Soccer Complex in Des Moines. All the members of the 2003 edition of Team Dayton 83 have completed one year of NCAA soccer competition. The team is coached by Ryan Baker and David Marshak.
